From Gangster to Entrepreneur - A Talk by Chiau Haw Choon, EY Entrepreneur of the Year, 2017
Haw Choon was voted Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2017, a far cry from his early years as a gangster in his home town, Alor Setar. He shared his riveting spiritual journey with a group of 25+ participants at the Encubator Coffee Chat on 2 June 2018.
It is a fascinating story of a young man who kept company with gangsters from a young age. His family ran a small hardware shop and he was sent to Singapore to learn English to remove him from the bad influence of his peers. Through the kindness of a lady who taught him, his curiosity was stirred that led him to the lady’s church and where he was saved. He was later sent to Australia to continue his studies but had to return home to managed his family’s business.
God’s favor was clearly upon him as he expanded his family’s business from a hardware shop to cement trading and later manufacturing, construction and property development. The Chin Hin Group is now a billion Ringgit business.
As a young Christian and keen learner, he looks to others for inspiration and guidance. His reliance is on God who shows him mercy and grace and took him out of the miry clay and planted his feet upon the Rock of Ages. A person Haw Choon invited to the chat came up to speak to Kah Hooi, the CEO of Encubator, and expressed that he was lost. Kah Hooi led the young man to Christ. It was the first fruit of our labor. All glory to God.
